How to Prep Your Skin Before an Aesthetic Treatment

Whether you’re coming in for Botox, dermal fillers, a PRP facial, or a laser session like UltraClear® or 3DMIRACL™, the way you prep your skin before your treatment can directly impact your results.

At Line Eraser MD, we believe that skin prep isn’t just about what happens in the treatment room, it starts well before you arrive. Here’s what you need to know to ensure your skin is in optimal condition for any cosmetic procedure.

1. Cleanse Gently, But Thoroughly

In the days leading up to your appointment, use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove excess oil, dirt, and debris. Avoid harsh exfoliants or active ingredients like retinoids unless otherwise advised.

Why it matters: A clean, calm canvas allows for better product absorption and minimizes the risk of irritation post-treatment.

2. Stop Retinoids and Acids (Temporarily)

Discontinue retinoids, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other active ingredients at least 3-5 days before treatments like laser resurfacing, microneedling, or injectables, unless we instruct you otherwise.

Why it matters: These products can thin the skin barrier or increase sensitivity, potentially leading to redness or peeling.

3. Hydrate – Inside and Out

Hydrated skin heals better and tolerates procedures more comfortably. Amp up your water intake and use a medical-grade moisturizer to strengthen your skin barrier.

Pro tip: Products containing hyaluronic acid or niacinamide are great for boosting hydration without clogging pores.

4. Avoid Blood Thinners (When Possible)

To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and other blood-thinning supplements 5-7 days before injectable appointments. Always check with your physician before discontinuing any medications.

Why it matters: The fewer blood thinners in your system, the less likely you are to bruise, especially with dermal fillers or Botox.

5. Skip the Tanning Bed (and the Beach)

Skip the Tanning Bed and the Beach

Excess sun exposure increases your risk of sensitivity, uneven healing, and even hyperpigmentation after treatments like lasers or microneedling.

Best practice: Stay out of direct sun and use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily, especially if you’re planning to get treated within the week.

6. Let Us Know About Any Skin Changes

If you’re experiencing a breakout, rash, cold sore, or active skin infection, let us know before your appointment. We may need to reschedule or adjust your treatment plan.

Why it matters: Safety is our top priority. Treating compromised skin can increase risks and delay your healing.

7. Come with a Bare Face

Arrive at your appointment without makeup, moisturizer, or SPF on your face, unless we specifically direct you to apply a pre-treatment product. This allows us to properly assess your skin and prep it with medical-grade cleansers before beginning.

Final Thought: Your Skin Is an Investment, Not a Quick Fix

By taking the time to properly prep your skin, you’re not just protecting your results, you’re maximizing them.

If you’re not sure whether to stop a specific product or supplement before treatment, just reach out. At Line Eraser MD, every treatment is customized, and so is your preparation plan.

Book a consultation today, and let’s make sure your skin is primed, polished, and ready for its next glow-up.
