Dr. Carol Eisenstat, a board-certified physician and founder of Line Eraser MD, was recently featured in Woman’s World in an article exploring why some women notice increased or excessive sweating after age 50. The feature was also syndicated by Yahoo Health.

Understanding Heat Sweat and Stress Sweat

In the article, Dr. Eisenstat explains that heat sweating is the body’s natural way of cooling itself after physical activity or an increase in temperature. Stress sweating, however, can appear suddenly when feelings such as anxiety, embarrassment or nervousness activate the body’s fight-or-flight response.

She notes that everyday sweating is generally normal when it corresponds with an identifiable trigger, including hot weather, exercise, spicy foods or stress.

When Sweating May Be Hyperhidrosis

Sweating that is far greater than the body needs for cooling, happens without an obvious trigger or begins interfering with everyday activities may be a sign of hyperhidrosis.

Dr. Eisenstat explains that primary hyperhidrosis commonly affects areas such as the underarms, hands, feet or face and often appears on both sides of the body. People should consider speaking with a physician when sweating causes them to soak through clothing, change clothes during the day or avoid normal social and professional activities.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may include prescription-strength antiperspirants, medication, iontophoresis or Botox. Patients experiencing persistent underarm sweating can learn more about Botox treatment for underarm sweating in New Jersey, administered by Dr. Carol Eisenstat.
